Government’s promise to assign 940 graduates to Chinese schools by 20 Feb 2014–unfulfilled

..Education Ministry to fulfill its promise of assigning 940 graduates of the Malaysian Teacher Training Institutions (IPGM) to Chinese medium schools (SJKC), by latest Feb 20, 2014.

Up until today, only around 160 teachers were assigned to the schools, said Federal Territory MCA education bureau chief Eddie Heng.

Datuk Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof had promised to assign the graduates to the SJKCs by January 20, in a meeting held with MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong and deputy minister Datuk Mary Yap last month, to solve the shortage of 1,214 teachers faced by the schools, said Heng.

“When we checked with the authorities, they either said they were in the midst of processing the graduates’ application or claimed that the graduates did not pass their interviews (with the Education Service Commission).

“These are graduates who have spent the last five and a half years undergoing the required training to be teachers. They did not even get a notification that they did not pass the interviews,” said Heng.

To overcome the shortage and the lack of warrants for GSTT, SJKCs have to pay between RM1,500 and RM1,800 from their own pocket for every temporary teacher they hire, he said.

“Some schools were even blamed by officials from the ministry for hiring temporary teachers without the ministry’s permission,” he said.
