Barisan Nasional loses in Perak referendum

BN loses ground in Peninsula

Among the three by-elections, the parliamentary seat at Bukit Gantang was the most sought after. Other than the opportunity to increase or retain their say in parliament, the seat was significant to both coalitions for the what has transpired in Perak recently.

While the status of BN Perak menteri besar Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir’s appointment and BN’s takeover of the state now lies in the courts, the ethics and moral legitimacy of it is no longer in question. Worse yet, the results indicate that the Bukit Gantang voters are not in favour of their new state government.

For throughout the campaign, BN had relied heavily on the argument that new Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Seri Mohamed Nizar Jamaluddin was a DAP stooge and he had committed treason for refusing to adhere to Perak sultan’s instruction to quit.

Another worrying factor for BN is that besides the Perak constitutional issue, its development message has also failed to sway voters in the semi-rural seat.

PR, as in the previous two by-elections, did not employ much racial banter and relied more on allegations of corruption within the BN coalition and the sudden takeover of Perak.

Early indications say that Pas’s improved victory margin came from non-Malay voters but according to unofficial data, Nizar had also made inroads in Umno-strong areas in Trong.
