The increase in oil prices has left the government with no choice but to revise the fuel subsidy, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said yesterday.
“We have reached the stage where the subsidies for fuel, gas and related items have exceeded the amount we spend on development.
“Therefore, we can no longer maintain it,” he said after opening a mass circumcision, ear piercing and Quran graduation programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Maulana near here.

For the fourth quarter ended March 31, the national carmaker reported a net profit of RM236.4mil, mainly attributed to higher sales of its popular models, operational improvements and a research and development (R&D) grant from the Government under the National Automotive Policy.
For the full year, the company made a net profit of RM202.9mil, or 36.9 sen a share, compared with a loss of RM589.5mil, or 107.3 sen a share, previously.
Excluding the RM194mil R&D grant, a RM44mil tax write-back and RM32mil income generated from the sale of intellectual property rights in the China market, Proton would have reported a loss of RM67mil for FY08, Hwang-DBS Vickers said.
“Proton surprised the market by posting a net profit of RM236.4mil, driven by exceptional items. Operationally, it remained in the red,” added Aseambankers.

THE interview board that selects outstanding students for Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships must have representation from all races to dispel allegations of favouritism and preferential treatment, Malaysia Nanban reported.
Balik Pulau MP Yusmadi Yusoff said that the appointment of members of other races would ensure that the selection was not biased and would help reduce dissatisfaction among the public.
Yusmadi said that currently the selection of candidates for PSD scholarships was still a mystery and complaints had been received that preferential treatment was being shown in the selection.
He was speaking to reporters after meeting some students who had failed to get PSD scholarships at the Parliament lobby.

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has called on Malaysians to boycott Utusan and Mingguan Malaysia for provoking ethnic sentiments.
In a joint statement, Opposition Leader Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said although there were signs that the mainstream media which are mostly controlled by Barisan Nasional component parties are slowly opening up, it is clear that they continue to be unfair and one-sided.
“Not only the coverage of parties in PR is limited, it is full of
distortions and information to discredit the PR and its leaders.
“Utusan and Mingguan Malaysia still unfairly criticise and demonise the parties in PR and their main leaders, continuing to do so as if the election campaigns are still on …,” she told a press conference in Parliament lobby today.
Wan Azizah said: “Utusan is always trying to provoke narrow ethnic sentiments, clearly with the intention of creating anger among Malays against PR. We wish to emphasise that the PR upholds the Federal Conastitution.
“We wish to improve the condition of all people irrespective of ethnicity, religion and gender.”
Wan Azizah also said PR regretted and “is worried about the wide politicising of the controversy of the Rulers and their powers”.
“We opine that all should agree that a Mentri Besar should have the prerogative to transfer any executive officers in his state. We accepted Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh’s statement from a legal perspective and that he did not mean to insult the Sultan.
“We hope that all will understand and accept the issue and stop raising the issue until it causes racial tension,” she said.
However, Wan Azizah added that the Rulers, who are the state religious head, should be consulted before transferring any officers of the state religious council.
