It was early festive cheer for the Chinese community here as MCA and Gerakan leaders presented government aid worth RM3.8mil to 15 Chinese schools in the state.

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting visited SRJC Kong Min (Second Branch), SRJC Chiao Nan, SMJK Chung Ling, Chung Ling (Private) High School and SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian yesterday where he presented a total of RM650,000.

Also present were his deputy Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy and state MCA leaders.

Chung Ling board of governors chairman Datuk Oo Jooi Tee said the schools were grateful for the allocation.

“I am pleased that the MCA president has given us his assurance that the Government will continue to support Chinese vernacular schools. His commitment is very heartening,” he said, adding that the money would go towards the schools’ development fund.

The MCA leaders later joined Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon at the new site for SM Phor Tay in Sungai Dua.

Dr Koh, who is also Gerakan acting president, announced that RM1mil had been given for SM Phor Tay’s relocation and new school building fund.

“We are very grateful to Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, who approved the school’s relocation last year. He gave us the green light in a short span of three months,” said Dr Koh.

“This shows that the Barisan Nasional Government is always ready to help all schools regardless of whether it is a vernacular or national school.”

Ong, who is also Housing and Local Government minister, told newsmen that both the MCA and Gerakan jointly applied for the government allocation.
