Lee Kuan Yew: Malaysia could have bettered Singapore if …

…In a recent interview with American journalist Tom Plate, Mr Lee said Singapore would be “happy” to go back to Malaysia should the latter practise meritocracy.
…
When Mr Plate asked Mr Lee who he thought would “come after” Singapore, the Minister Mentor said: “We are a standing indictment of all the things that they (Malaysia) can be doing differently.”
“If they would just educate the Chinese and Indians, use them and treat them as their citizens, they can equal us and even do better than us and we would be happy to rejoin them.”

While much has changed since then, scepticism towards a reunion remains.
Said Dr Ooi Kee Beng, an Institute of South-east Asian Studies (ISEAS) fellow: “The chances of a re-merger in 1996 and in 2007 are the same – Zero.”
While bilateral economic links would continue to increase, Malaysia is far from ditching its decades-old bumiputera policy, “where race-based affirmative action … has disqualified efficacy as the criterion for policy correctness“, Dr Ooi added.

While the whole world is becoming a village there is no point in thinking whether Singapore aand malayasia are one or two, they are at least seperated by water , India and Pakistan and Bangladesh have become three and are contiguous.

Speaking as a malaysian who gained british citizenship since 1975 following marriage to a british man after I qualified as a State registered nurse in uk where I was accepted for student nurse training on the merits of my GOOD “O” LEVELS FORM 5 ,I would like to comment on LEE KUAN YEW’S MERITOCRACY SPEECH.
I was in my opinion very much discriminated against because I was not Bumiputra and did not qualify for a nurse training place in penang nurse training school because if there were 30 places intake- 25 had to be earmarked for bumiputras and 5 for non which means indian, chinese or other ethnics. This would ignore any facts that one was more capable from the results of ones exam results compared to the Bumis.
I gather that the same discrimination occurs and even to a more extreme degree in all areas which will eventually result in chaos in economy, education and advancement of the coutry. Superficially, all may seem well as the oppressed simmer quietly, pretend to be less able in order not to offend the sensibilities of the Bumiputras because they are accused of showing off. In reality the pressure cooker may be heading for a huge explosion.
In Britain there are at least Race discrimination laws whereas I doubt if non Bumiputrasdare even complain as they know they have no protection. The outside world are increasingly aware and horrified by the continuing aggressive policies of race based affirmative action I feel sure.
