ASLI launches Merdeka Statement

Posted by omong on August 3, 2007

“Weaning off” dependency on government aid, pushing for automatic voter registration at age 21 and testing all new policies against the tenets of the Federal Constitution and Rukunegara were among the points contained in the recently drawn up Merdeka Statement.

Launched yesterday by Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Asli) president Mirzan Mahathir, the statement contains eight points, which strives to form a national identity by recognising and celebrating the country’s diversity.

They are strengthening national unity, enhancing international competitiveness, creating an innovation-based economy, redressing imbalances, reinforcing institutions, reforming education, ensuring quality of life, and improving governance and fighting corruption.

Mirzan said that the “living document” was designed to move with the times.

“It is important that after 50 years of independence to set out what are the feeling and challenges, and what we need to do,” he said yesterday after the launch, which was also attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Bernard Dompok.

Khairy calls Anwar a traitor to the Malay cause

Posted by omong on August 3, 2007

Umno Youth has labelled Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim – who was once head of the movement – a traitor to the Malay cause.

In making the declaration, Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaludin said: “The (coming) general elections is not about politics but the future of the Malays.”

Anwar is a puppet of the United States and the Jews, thus he must be hounded until there is no more place for him to run to,” he told a state Umno Youth gathering on Wednesday night.

Among the 5,000 people present were the wing’s former chief Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Deputy Information Minister, and Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Tajol Rosli Ghazali.

Khairy said the movement was angered by Anwar’s persistence in wanting to do away with the New Economic Policy, a cause close to the hearts of the Malays.

“He wanted to abolish it simply because he wanted to win the support of the non-Malays,” he said.

Posted by omong on August 3, 2007

Contractors who delay work on new government projects will be slapped with stop work orders.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who gave his approval to the Works Ministry to implement the move, said he hoped to see the delivery time of new projects expedited.

However, the Prime Minister reminded the ministry not to compromise on quality when urging contractors to complete work according to the stipulated time frame.
