REALISM, it appears is the order of the day and for now, it seems to have won back the heart of weary investors – well, at least for Proton Holdings Bhd.
What sparked renewed interest in the company is that the Government has finally come around to realising that if it takes giving up a “significant equity” to another party, be it foreign or local, then it would have to be.
There is the possibility that Proton may sell 51% of its manufacturing arm to Germany’s Volkswagen AG. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told newsmen that “it’s an option we are considering at the moment … it depends on detailed discussions and an approval will have to be made after that.”
Over the week, Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop also reiterated that the Government is “fully open minded and will do whatever it takes to make Proton viable,” adding that if it involves giving a foreign car maker significant equity, it will be done.

The Johor Umno will table a motion to reject the use of meritocracy and the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English in the debate on the motion of thanks on the president’s speech at the party’s general assembly next week.
Its information chief Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi, who will table the motion, said it was important to bring up the issues as the grassroots Malays felt they had been left out because of the system.
